Chemistry -Chapter 16: The Periodic Table

Topic: Group 0 / XVIII - Noble Gases

Noble gases are in Group O or VIII,
They sat around without doing a thing,
But chemists managed to activate them
And now such hope and joy they bring!

Also the ‘Helium’ or ‘Neon family’
They have the lowest densities.
Noble gases, they rarely react,
Yet play big roles in welding and space tech.

They make up less than 1% of air.
Not only monatomic, but also rare,
Colourless at room temperature
They’re used to create inert atmospheres.

Noble gases are happy atoms,
‘Cause they have full valence shells
They go about their natural lives
They don’t react with other elements well.

Their melting and boiling points are low
And each of them is a non-metallic gas
All other elements try to imitate them
‘Cause NOBLE GASES KICK YOUR …shins.

Helium when mixed with oxygen in tanks
Prevents divers from getting the bends
Borne of excess nitrogen in one’s blood
The bends make breathing rather hard.

In abundance on the moon that has stored deposits of,
Helium-3 is a proposed fuel for spacecraft.
Mostly used to fill balloons and blimps
Helium can turn your voice into high-pitched screams.

Argon’s commonly used in filament light bulbs,
It keeps the other gases from reacting in the heat.
And because of its striking, bright colours
Neon lighting can be seen on almost every street.

Discovered in 1898
Xenon is the rarest of its state
Still recovered by liquefaction
Xenon puts strobe lights into action

Radon has got seven electron shells,
It holds 83 electrons and protons as well.
‘If I’m an eye surgeon then I can bump off superman,
‘Cause Krypton’s in my laser and I’m holding it here in my hand.
